The best opening is the one that keeps the next two rooms playable while leaving a clear pivot. In the Planner, compare the job each opening completes now, not the number of rare items it might use later.
Compare the three openingsScenario one: reliable damage first
Use this opening when the first offers are ordinary and you need a route that works before the build has a name. Choose the weapon that repeats its main event often, then add one item that improves delivery or uptime. The goal is not to finish the final build; it is to clear the next rooms without spending every resource on a hypothetical trigger.
In the Planner, start with the Hunter and weapon, then add only one or two candidates. If the route has a clean element direction and no warning about the weapon being unsupported, it is a strong baseline. Keep one empty mental slot for a crowd answer or recovery tool. This opening is best when the shop has no obvious engine piece.
Scenario two: crowd control first
Use this opening when early rooms are the real danger: several targets enter together, your weapon needs time to build, or your Hunter is vulnerable while reloading. A crowd tool can be the correct first purchase even when a single-target damage item has a higher theoretical ceiling. It buys the time needed for the rest of the route to function.
In the Planner, mark the crowd item as the current job and check what it displaces. Do not add three crowd pieces at once. One control tool plus a reliable weapon is usually easier to pivot than a full control package that has no answer for a boss. When the crowd problem disappears, use the next choice to add a single-target or sustained-damage line.
Scenario three: economy first
Use this opening when the Hunter or first relic already gives you a way to generate value and the first rooms are safe enough to tolerate a slower payoff. The danger is confusing income with combat power. An economy item is good only when it pays for a concrete upgrade before the route falls behind.
In the Planner, add the economy piece and then add the weapon you can actually use while saving. If the route requires several future items before it has coverage, mark it as greedy and keep a combat fallback. Set a stop condition: if the next room needs immediate damage or the economy cannot fund the next shop, spend the reserve and pivot.
How to compare the openings
Do not compare the three routes by counting highlighted tags. Ask four questions: which route works now, which one covers the next failure mode, which one leaves a safe replacement, and which one depends on the fewest future drops? The best opening changes with the first offers and the difficulty, so a route that is excellent in Normal may be too greedy in Reality.
A useful test is to remove the best candidate from each route. If the reliable opening still works, it has a strong floor. If the crowd opening collapses without one control item, it needs a second answer. If the economy opening cannot survive without its future engine, it is a plan for a lucky run, not a default opener.
