Elena: Mark the Target, Then Make the Dodge Pay

Elena's route turns target selection and safe movement into damage opportunities. The mark relationships are in the current game data, and the dodge window is the part to learn in play. Updated for patch 1.0.479.

QUICK ANSWER

Mark the target, keep firing, then use the dodge window offensively; safe execution matters more than a theoretical arrow payoff.

  • Mark the enemy you actually need to kill
  • Keep the weapon element coherent
  • Take movement and survival when timing is the failure point

DECISION LAYER

Treat the dodge as an offensive trigger, not a panic button.

Elena's route pays when mark uptime, safe movement, and counter-fire happen in the same loop. The fallback is always a functional weapon before a theoretical arrow payoff.

WEAPON DECISION

Recommended weapons, with a fallback

Use the first weapon as the route anchor. The other two are pivots for the run you actually get.

Why it fits. A physical ranged anchor that keeps the mark and counter-fire route readable.

Tradeoff. The route still depends on movement timing; the weapon cannot fix missed dodges.

Why it fits. A reliable physical alternative when the Crossbow is not offered.

Tradeoff. It may demand more reload discipline while Elena is moving.

Why it fits. A crowd-control pivot when the run needs Disruption more than mark payoff.

Tradeoff. Changing element can disconnect the current relic package.

RUN TIMELINE

Early, mid, and late choices

The right item changes as the run moves from establishing a loop to protecting a clear.

Early

Make mark and movement repeatable.

Look for: Hunting Mark, a safe ranged weapon, and movement or survival support.

Checkpoint: Do not add damage payoff while the dodge window is still being missed.

Mid

Turn marks into automatic pressure.

Look for: Auto Trigger, Painful Moment, frequency, and the active element.

Checkpoint: A marked target should be the enemy you actually need to remove, not the easiest target.

Late

Scale priority-target damage without losing safety.

Look for: Boss damage, crit only after uptime, and movement insurance.

Checkpoint: The route is ready for a hard boss when you can mark, shoot, dodge, and reset without panic.

MATCHUP TEST

Boss damage and crowd clear are different jobs

Boss

This is Elena's best matchup. Mark the priority target, keep the counter-fire window deliberate, and take boss damage once movement is reliable.

Crowd

Against packs, value a weapon or relic that covers space while Elena marks the target that matters. Do not chase single-target payoff if the room is the actual failure point.

RNG RECOVERY

What to do when the core item is missing

If this happens

The dodge window or mark payoff is not appearing consistently.

Take this instead

Use a safe physical gun, movement support, and reliable damage; let Elena's marks be an upside instead of the only source of output.

Do not do this

Do not value a perfect arrow chain above a weapon you can safely keep firing.

KEEP MOVING

Turn the advice into the next decision

Search the exact item, compare its trigger, then load this route into the Planner. The goal is a useful next pick, not a perfect shopping list.

Elena works best when the mark, the firing rhythm, and the dodge window support one another. Start with the route below, then move a survival pick ahead of the damage payoff whenever the timing is costing you the run.

The engine

Elena rewards a run that keeps one important target marked while you continue producing ordinary shooting events. That gives the build a clear order: establish the target, keep enough uptime to punish it, then add safe damage rather than chasing a second unrelated engine. The mark is the organizing signal; the weapon is the repeatable way to cash it in.

This makes Elena a good fit for players who already look at enemy position and attack timing. It also makes her less forgiving than a flat extra-shot route. If the run offers mark support but no reliable way to keep firing or dodge safely, the pieces are present without a functioning loop.

Working skill order

  1. Hunting Mark: establish the target condition that the rest of the route can read.
  2. Auto Trigger: add more automatic events once the mark is already doing useful work.
  3. Painful Moment: take the marked-target payoff when the run can keep the condition active.

The order is a blueprint, not a measured ranking. A survival pick is correct when the alternative is dying before the marked target can be finished. The full current skill pool is shown below so a run can use the nearest available substitute rather than force a missing name.

SkillCurrent route note
Hunting MarkPriority-target mark engine.
Auto TriggerMore automatic damage events.
Painful MomentPayoff on marked targets.
Burst Silver ArrowTurns each arrow impact into a small piercing shrapnel volley, converting a single-target proc into area coverage. For build planning this is your main way to make an arrow build clear packs instead of only sniping one enemy; its value climbs sharply once you have high arrow frequency from other skills.
Dance of DeathDuring [Demon Hunting Time] your ammo is effectively infinite, which means the window becomes pure uninterrupted uptime. This changes weapon choice: magazines that are tiny or reload slowly stop being a downside inside the window, so heavy-hitting, ammo-hungry weapons pair extremely well with a Demon Hunting Time build.
Demon Breaking Silver ArrowThis is the bridge between Elena's two engines: while [Demon Hunting Time] runs, every arrow both multiplies its damage several times over and doubles up. It rewards builds that stack arrow frequency and then burst inside the window, making it a top pick for boss-killing setups that combine both halves of her kit.

Weapon and element

Vintage Musket is the working default because it is readable and gives the mark engine frequent ordinary shots. It is not a claim that the Musket wins every Elena run. Keep the weapon whose firing rhythm lets you maintain pressure while moving, then let its element guide the supporting relic and Tarot choices.

A committed element is usually more valuable than a higher-rarity sidegrade in a disconnected element. Physical builds Hemorrhage, Frost builds Freeze, Lightning builds Disruption, Acid builds Corrosion, and Fire builds Ignition. Elena can use any of them when the rest of the run agrees; the page does not invent a universal best element.

Relics and Tarot

Use one damage package that pays off against the marked target, then fill the remaining gaps with reload, fire-rate, and survival support. Emperor's Holy Sword belongs here only when the run already has a real critical route. Magician's Hat is the safer general support because it reduces the time between the events Elena needs to create.

The Hierophant is a sensible Tarot direction for a boss-focused mark route. The condition matters more than the card's rarity: if the run is clearing ordinary rooms but cannot hold a marked boss safely, a reliable defensive choice is the better decision.

When the route is failing

  • You mark targets but cannot keep a safe firing rhythm. Add reload, movement, or survival before another conditional payoff.
  • You are spreading damage across several targets without finishing the marked one. Stop adding broad effects and restore target focus.
  • You are taking critical items without enough uptime. A larger number on the card does not repair a loop that is mostly waiting.

If the run never offers the mark package, play Elena as a reliable weapon-and-survival generalist. That is a lower-ceiling route, but it is still a coherent run and more honest than pretending an absent condition is active.

Version note

Skill names and relationships are checked against the current game data. Because the game has no public damage-training dummy, use the route order, movement check, and survival fallback here instead of a precise DPS ranking. See the source notesfor the data behind the guide.
