Stella: The Starlight and Tarot Route

Stella turns Tarot picks into a damage system instead of a lottery. This page gives the working route, the one relic-plus-Tarot combo that defines her, and a straight answer on what is actually known about her strength. Reviewed for patch 1.0.479.

QUICK ANSWER

Stella rewards a connected Tarot and Sub Weapon plan, with more setup than the straightforward routes.

  • Treat Starlight uptime as the first job
  • Use The Lovers only when the second weapon contributes
  • Keep a survival fallback ready when the setup does not appear

DECISION LAYER

Use Tarot to deepen one weapon, not to open three new engines.

Stella's value comes from connecting Starlight, the main weapon, and selected Tarot rules. The route is strongest when every card has a job the current loadout can trigger.

WEAPON DECISION

Recommended weapons, with a fallback

Use the first weapon as the route anchor. The other two are pivots for the run you actually get.

START HEREVintage Musket

Why it fits. A stable main weapon that makes Starlight uptime easy to read.

Tradeoff. The five-round cycle makes reload support important.

Why it fits. A deliberate burst weapon for cards that reward timing and room control.

Tradeoff. Its pause rhythm can reduce Starlight consistency if the route is not practiced.

OPTION 3Dark Ice

Why it fits. A crowd-control fallback when Freeze already has support in the run.

Tradeoff. Do not add Frost just because a Tarot card looks rare.

RUN TIMELINE

Early, mid, and late choices

The right item changes as the run moves from establishing a loop to protecting a clear.

Early

Make Starlight happen often enough to matter.

Look for: Triple Fate, a consistent main weapon, and reload or Battle Skill support.

Checkpoint: If enhanced shots are rare, another rule-changing Tarot is not the fix.

Mid

Connect the card to a real trigger.

Look for: Starlit Haste, Endless Star, and The Lovers only when the Sub Weapon contributes.

Checkpoint: Every selected card should explain which event it changes.

Late

Convert the connected system into burst.

Look for: The Emperor after crit sources, current-element support, and safe uptime.

Checkpoint: A full Tarot bar is not a win condition if the main weapon cannot trigger it.

MATCHUP TEST

Boss damage and crowd clear are different jobs

Boss

Bosses reward a repeatable Starlight window and a card that improves the main weapon rather than a decorative second system. Keep the Sub Weapon for a real effect or coverage gap.

Crowd

Use Tarot and weapon choices that widen the number of useful events per room. Freeze or volley support can be better than pure boss crit when packs are the wall.

RNG RECOVERY

What to do when the core item is missing

If this happens

The Lovers or a useful Sub Weapon effect never appears.

Take this instead

Drop the cross-weapon plan. Build Starlight uptime around the main weapon, Battle Skill consistency, and the current element.

Do not do this

Do not keep a dead Sub Weapon slot just because the Tarot was the original plan.

KEEP MOVING

Turn the advice into the next decision

Search the exact item, compare its trigger, then load this route into the Planner. The goal is a useful next pick, not a perfect shopping list.

Stella is a setup-heavy route. Start with Starlight uptime, then add the Lovers' Gift and The Lovers package only when the second weapon has a useful effect to share. Keep a reliable weapon and a survival option ready if the interaction does not appear.

The core idea

Most Hunters ask one question of a Tarot card: does this number help? Stella asks a different one: does this card change a rule I can build around? Her kit is organized around Starlight and around Tarot interaction, which means the cards stop being a random bonus layer and start being the engine itself. That is also why she is harder to play well — a run that offers her nothing to interact with leaves her shooting a plain weapon, while a run that lines up gives her a payoff no other Hunter can build.

The practical consequence for decision-making: when Stella is offered a choice between a flat stat upgrade and a card or relic that changes how an effect resolves, the rule-changer is usually worth more to her than it would be to Marcus or Long Tong. That is the whole reason to play her.

Skill order

Open with Triple Fate. It is the core Tarot-interaction pick and the reason the rest of the route holds together; this one is cross-checked against the current English database. Follow with Starlit Haste to raise how often enhanced shots come out, then Endless Star to keep Starlight uptime from collapsing between windows.

Take these follow-ups when the route is working; the recommended order can change if a run hands you a real survival pick before the second skill, take it — Stella's route is long and a dead Hunter scores zero synergy.

Her signature combo: Lovers' Gift plus The Lovers

Lovers' Gift gives Bullet Attack +30% and Battle Skill Damage +30%, unified to whichever of the two is higher — so it pays out whether your run leans on shooting or on Battle Skill. Its second line is the important one: when used together with The Lovers, it opens that card's other orientation effect as well.

That matters because the two faces of The Lovers do different jobs. Upright gives you the Weapon Effects of your Sub Weapon — some will not take effect, which is stated in the card text and is not a bug. Reversed makes your Battle Skill also release your Sub Weapon's Battle Skill. Holding the relic and the card together is the one reliable way to stop choosing between them.

This is the part of Stella that is genuinely distinctive and the part competitor pages most often get wrong, because it only makes sense if you read the relic text and the card text together. It is also the reason her Sub Weapon slot is a real decision for her and near-noise for most other Hunters: with this pair online, the Sub Weapon is no longer a backup, it is a second source of effects.

Weapon choice

Commit to one element, same as any other build — Physical builds Hemorrhage, Frost builds Freeze, Lightning builds Disruption, Acid builds Corrosion, Fire builds Ignition. Vintage Musket is the reasonable default because it is reliable and available, not because it is secretly best for her.

The Stella-specific wrinkle is the Sub Weapon. Once you are committed to the Lovers pair, the Sub Weapon stops being a slot you ignore and becomes something you choose for the effects it carries. If you are not running that pair, treat the Sub Weapon the way every other Hunter does and spend your attention on the main weapon instead.

Relic and Tarot directions

After Lovers' Gift, the useful shapes are the ordinary ones: Magician's Hat when reload gaps are interrupting your enhanced shots, and Bullet Attack, Battle Skill Damage, or current-element support to thicken whichever half of the kit the run has actually given you.

On Tarot, the discipline is to avoid taking a rule-changing card until its condition matches your loadout. A card that rewrites how an effect resolves is worth more than a stat card only when you own the thing it rewrites. Taken early and blind, it is worth less than a plain upgrade — this is the most common way a promising Stella run quietly goes nowhere.

What kills the build

Three things, in order of how often they happen. Splitting elements, which costs you Transmutation progress exactly like it does for every other Hunter. Collecting rule-changing Tarot cards whose conditions you never satisfy, which feels productive and does nothing. And spending the whole run assembling the Lovers pair while taking no survival at all — the combo is strong, but it is not worth reaching a boss with nothing else.

How you get Stella

Multiple launch-window write-ups describe Stella as a progression unlock rather than a day-one roster pick, which is also why several tier lists left her unrated. The exact unlock condition is not listed here, so if you are searching for her build and do not have her yet, that is the likely reason — and it is worth knowing before you plan a run around her.

Version note

The current route is built around the item and skill relationships shown in the Planner. Patch 1.0.479 may change Tarot, Transmutation, or unlock details, so compare the current effect text with this route before committing. See the source notes for the data behind the guide.
